Top destinations Holland
Since we understand that it might be hard to plan your trip by a list of cities and towns, we have cherry picked the favorite destinations of both tourists and locals alike. Car rental Netherlands can be quick and easy with us. We will explain in short how these places made it onto this list and why you should consider going there. From then on, you’re free to go wherever you would like!
Alkmaar:
Visit Alkmaar for the first time and you will never forget it. You will always want to return to this gorgeous town which is only half an hour of driving away from Amsterdam and just fifteen minutes from the beach. Wander past all the monuments, canals, shops, museums and terraces and you will marvel at the beauty of the old center. Tourists love it here and so do we. That might have something to do with all the tasty cheese, though.
Amsterdam:
This city needs little introduction, so perhaps a small explanation is better. Something many people get wrong is that Amsterdam is actually not a country, it is the capital of a country. The Netherlands, or Holland, to be precise! What is also a fun fact is that New York was at one point in time called New Amsterdam and carry the remarkable resemblance which is that both cities rarely sleep. There is simply so much to do, so much activity and culture, that you will never get bored when visiting Amsterdam. There’s only one way to find out!
Deventer:
This town is very lively and has a monumental atmosphere. It owes that in many ways to its rich history which you will find and even taste all over the city. It is home to many different kinds of international kitchens and even has its own local mustard, beer and biscuits to tickle your taste buds! Deventer has everything a modern city should, without losing the charm and coziness of the days gone by.
Eindhoven:
The city of light. Home of Dutch innovation and technology. All thanks to the Philips factory, which started out as a light bulb factory but eventually grew into a technology giant who came up with many inventions like the cassette, CD’s and other such innovations. The country and the city of Eindhoven in particular are very proud of this heritage and you will surely find nods and notes to it all over the place when you pay the southern town a visit.
Enschede:
Most Dutch towns and cities are located on the western half of the country, but that doesn’t make the east any less worthwhile. Enschede is located close to the border with Germany and is basically the beating heart of eastern Holland. During World War II it was bombarded many times by both the German and the Allied troops, who thought they were in Germany already. Although this was very unfortunate, it also granted the city an opportunity to do things differently. They went on to build many parks and bike roads which earned it the moniker of greenest city in the Netherlands. For a city, it is rather quiet in Enschede. If that is your thing, be sure to visit.
Groningen:
The largest city of the northern Dutch provinces has a very young population. Groningen is a student city which explains its youth. A large percentage of its inhabitants study at the university and as such the city is very lively. Visit the famous Martini tower or drive your car rental Netherlands to one of the picture-perfect old villages in the surrounding area. Often people call Groningen an undiscovered gem because very few tourists visit the place. There are many surprises hidden in het northern countryside. Will you find them all?
Heerenveen:
Another city in one of the northern provinces in the Netherlands. It is much smaller than its eastern neighbor, but no less fun! In Heerenveen there is lots of things to do, but the foremost thing is visiting the ice-skating hall Thialf. The Dutch love ice skating almost as much as they love cheese and Thialf is the epicenter of ice skating in the Netherlands. Many international competitions are held here, and the tickets are very reasonably priced, so if you get the chance you should really try to attend one of the competitions.
Maastricht:
From the far north we go all the way down south to the province of Limburg, where its capital city of Maastricht is located. It has lots of boutiques, small picturesque streets, old buildings and a whole lot of tasty restaurants. What would you think about having lunch or dinner in an old firefighter’s cantina? After a transformation the hall was repurposed as a restaurant where you can enjoy some quality food after sightseeing and shopping all day. What’s not to like?
Rotterdam:
This harbor city and its stubborn inhabitants form the second largest city in the Netherlands. Home to probably the most beautiful skyline in the Netherlands, with sad reason. Rotterdam was all but completely destroyed during World War II, which resulted in the surrender of the Netherlands since the German military vowed to do the same to Amsterdam should the Dutch choose not to surrender. After the war ended the people from Rotterdam rebuilt their city with pride under the old saying: ‘’niet lullen maar poetsen!’’. This means that you should not say, you should do. Which they did, and so it came to be that the city now boasts an impressive range of modern architecture and stately buildings. Be sure to bring your camera.
The Hague – Den Haag:
Once little more than a small farm near a stream, The Hague is now a very important city for the Netherlands. It is home to many of its political institutes, the government, most ministries and many embassies from countries all over the world. In addition to that, it’s the place where the Dutch royalty lives and the place where a few important international justice bodies work from. It will probably not surprise you that the city has a rich history and many, many old buildings that will remind you of this.
Utrecht:
A lively city right in the middle of the Netherlands. Utrecht is famous for having the highest church tower in all of Holland, the Domtoren, which is always visible from anywhere in the city. This makes navigating through the car-free center a breeze. Stroll along the canals and sit on a terrace in front of an old wharf cellar to enjoy the atmosphere while drinking a cup of coffee and recharging your internal battery. This unique city will make you want to stay forever.
Breda:
This is a bit of a quirky town and its inhabitants are all about fun. That’s not the only draw, though. In terms of historical value and beauty it is up there with the likes of Amsterdam and Utrecht. You can visit one of the museums, walk through the historical heart of the city or spend the day shopping in the many stores and boutiques. The best part though, is the annual carnaval which takes place in the entire southern part of the Netherlands, but with Breda as one of its main locations. During that period it is called Kielegat and the people celebrate the carnaval by dressing up silly and drinking beer for a few days straight. If that is your thing, don’t miss out.
Leiden:
This city is perhaps one of the most picturesque that the Netherlands has to offer out of its large collection of historical cities and towns. Leiden has drawn famous people to itself for centuries. Dutch master painter Rembrandt van Rijn was born there, Clusius grew the first tulip here and Boerhaave gave lessons in anatomy and medicine to people from all over Europe. A great place to sniff up culture or shop around, Leiden is the place to be.

Tips and tricks, what should you look out for?
There are many stories about car rentals gone awry. Those stories were a big part of the inspiration that led to the creation of our comparison tool. You need a trustworthy rental company who will put you first and themselves second. That’s why we investigate them before we list them and why we try to enable you to compare every rental company on as many different aspects as you may find relevant. However, we cannot prevent any issues beyond that point. This means that most user practices are still very important after you have decided to rent a car from a certain company. As such, we have made a short list of important subjects to pay attention to.
Checking the car
You should thoroughly inspect the car for damages when you receive it. Is there a tiny dent or scratch on the exterior? Take a photo! Is one of the bumpers loose? Take another photo! This process might take a while, but it can save you a lot of misery on the return date. You also want to check the tire pressure, lights and other such things which might not always visible when they’re falling short. Car rental deals in the Netherlands are easy with us.
Insurance
Many car rental companies offer one or multiple forms of insurance when you rent a car in the Netherlands. If you own a car, chances are your insurance for that one will cover most of the ground already. When you pay with a credit card, the credit card company often provide you with the extra level of insurance which your general car insurance doesn’t cover. This combined often makes a separate insurance from the rental company obsolete. There are exceptions however, that could make a fully insured rental period a wise decision. Be sure to look into this before renting.

The fuel tank
In Holland, car rental companies will usually supply you with a full fuel tank. When you return the car, you are supposed to make sure the tank is full as well. Therefore, you might want to look for a gas station near the company before driving off into the sunset in your brand new rental. This will save you time and stress when you return the car with only a few litres left in the tank.
